Unlike Rome I or Mediaeval II etc on Very Hard, Legendary in Attila is fiendish without ever feeling like a grind. While the AI isn't perfect, it's a huge improvement on most previous Total War games, and on higher difficulties you'll face a serious challenge at least without the AI getting tonnes of free money every turn. You can find a mod to do almost anything, from just double the sizes of garrisons to convert it entirely into a sort of Mediaeval III. What really makes it an outstanding game is the mods. Think Barbarian Invasion II but better in every way imaginable.

It's immersive, invigoratingly difficult in places, atmospheric and very rewarding when you complete certain goals. This is one of the top five games I've ever played. TLDR: possibly the best military strategy game ever made.
